DOSAGE
Dosage needs to be individualized. The initial dose must be low and then increased gradually, specifically in patients over 60 years old. Whether ARTANE (trihexyphenidyl HCl) may best get before or after meals must be based on the way the patient reacts. Postencephalitic patients, that are usually prone to excessive salivation, may want to get it after meals and might, moreover, require small amounts of atropine which, under such circumstances, is oftentimes an efficient adjuvant. If ARTANE (trihexyphenidyl) will dry the mouth excessively, it could possibly be better to take it before meals, unless it causes nausea. If taken after meals, the thirst sometimes induced may be allayed by mint candies, chewing gum or water.
Abrupt withdrawal for treating parkinsonism may result in acute exacerbation of parkinsonism symptoms; therefore, abrupt withdrawal should be avoided.
Abrupt withdrawal of treatment may result in neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS).
STORAGE
Store Artane at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store within the bathroom. Keep in a strong, light-resistant container. Keep Artane out of the reach of kids and far from pets.

Minor side effects, including dryness of the mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, mild nausea or nervousness, is going to be experienced by 30 to 50 percent of patients. These sensations, however, are much less troublesome with ARTANE (trihexyphenidyl) than with belladonna alkaloids and they are usually less disturbing than unallenated parkinsonism. Such reactions tend to dwindle pronounced, and in many cases to disappear, as treatment continues. Even before these reactions have remitted spontaneously, they might often be controlled by careful adjustment of dosage form, level of drug, or interval between doses.
If you experience any in the following serious side effects, stop taking trihexyphenidyl and seek emergency medical assistance or get hold of your doctor immediately:
